East High Student Council earns coveted “Kelly Neiber Service Award”
The East High Student Council recently received the Kelly Neiber Service Award during the Iowa Association of Student Council (IASC) Leadership Conference. This recognition is given to an Iowa high school student council that provides an outstanding community service project to bridge school and community impact. This award is in honor of Ms. Kelly Neiber, who contributed to the Iowa Association of Student Councils in numerous capacities for over twenty years.
East High earned the Kelly Neiber Service Award in honor of the “Bickford Buddies” program, which began in the spring of 2020. Bickford Buddies is a pen pal project between East High students and Bickford Cottage residents. Especially amid COVID-19, when visitors were limited for nursing home residents, this project served as a bright spot for residents. Throughout the year, students have extended the project to include socially distanced interactions.
“I am so proud of these kids and how they have continued to forge ahead through the most difficult year ever. They are more determined than ever to affect positive change and culture in our schools and community,” said Michelle Pick, East High student council advisor.
